The Great Wave off Kanagawa: Coaster Set

The woodblock print “The Great Wave off Kanagawa” by Katsushika Hokusai is probably one of Japan’s most famous works of art. It was widely received in the West too and by now is deeply rooted in art and pop culture here as well. Today the motif meets you on posters, on textiles and on all sorts of everyday objects.

This coaster set brings the work into the household as a useful and at the same time stylish addition. Laid side by side, the four coasters together form one artwork in ukiyo-e style — an art form that sets out to depict scenes from daily life, landscapes and the theater. Translated, ukiyo-e means “pictures of the floating world”, a fitting description for the style of this motif. The original belongs to a series of 46 pictures showing the region around Mount Fuji.

The surface is rolled in gold color and makes the coasters a real eye-catcher, even when no cup is standing on them.
