Spirited Away: No-Face Bamboo Chopsticks

Kaonashi, called No-Face in English, is one of the quietest figures in “Spirited Away”: a spirit behind a white mask who follows Chihiro through the bathhouse, says barely a word and in the end finds a calm place with the witch Zeniba. As a motif on chopsticks he is given a new job.

The No-Face bamboo chopsticks are about 21 cm long and made from light, natural-colored bamboo. They sit comfortably in the hand, and the grooved tip provides optimal grip - useful with everything that likes to slide away, from noodles to smooth pieces of sushi. In Japan bamboo has always been the material of choice for chopsticks: light, springy and not as cold in the hand as metal.

The upper part is lacquered black and shows Kaonashi’s iconic face along with small red lanterns. The contrast of pale wood and dark grip makes the pair more than cutlery: sturdy enough for every day, stylish enough for the display cabinet. A loving detail for everyone who knows the film - and a face that watches you eat, calmly.

In use they are simply good tools - for ramen night, for a sushi feast or for a bento lunch. As is usual with bamboo, they prefer a short wash by hand to long baths in water. If you give them away, you can pass on the Japanese table rule with them: never stand chopsticks upright in the rice, lay them across the bowl or on a rest instead. Whether you treat yourself or someone else - they suit Studio Ghibli fans just as well as everyone who cooks and eats Japanese food.
